Quick answer: Since 21 March 2026, new IELTS tests in the UAE are taken on computer, but paper-based IELTS results are still accepted for as long as they are valid (normally two years from the test date). Speaking is still face to face with a real examiner, computer-delivered results usually arrive in 1–2 days, and if one skill lets you down, One Skill Retake lets you resit just that section instead of the whole test.

If you last looked at the IELTS exam a year ago, a lot has changed. This guide explains what the computer-delivered IELTS in the UAE looks like in 2026, how the test is structured, how One Skill Retake works, and how students in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah can prepare with confidence. If you want expert help along the way, our IELTS classes in Dubai cover every skill for both Academic and General Training.

What changed in the IELTS exam in the UAE in 2026?

IDP confirmed that from 21 March 2026, new IELTS tests in the UAE are delivered on computer. This does not cancel paper-based IELTS: if you already took the test on paper, your Test Report Form stays valid for the usual two-year period, and UAE universities, employers and other organisations continue to accept it in the same way. The main changes for new test takers are:

  • Computer delivery for Listening, Reading and Writing. You type your essays and click your answers on screen.
  • Speaking stays human. You still speak with a trained IELTS examiner, not a machine.
  • Faster results. IDP UAE says computer-delivered results are typically ready within 1–2 days.
  • One Skill Retake (OSR). Available in the UAE for computer-delivered IELTS, so you can improve one skill without repeating the full test.
  • More test dates. Computer-delivered sessions run more often, which makes it easier to fit IELTS around university or visa deadlines.
  • Writing on Paper option. At selected Dubai test centres you can take Listening and Reading on computer and handwrite your Writing answers on an official answer sheet.

Tip: Paper-based practice books are still useful for content, but you should now do timed practice on a computer, especially for Writing, where typing speed and on-screen editing matter.

IELTS test format 2026: what is in each section?

The format and scoring did not change, only the delivery. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training share the same Listening and Speaking tests. Reading and Writing differ depending on the version you take.

SectionTimeWhat you do
ListeningAbout 30 minutes4 recordings, 40 questions. Answers are typed on screen.
Reading60 minutes3 passages, 40 questions. Academic uses academic texts; General Training uses everyday and workplace texts.
Writing60 minutesTask 1 and Task 2. Academic Task 1 describes a chart or diagram; General Training Task 1 is a letter.
Speaking11–14 minutesFace-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner in 3 parts.

Each skill is scored from 0 to 9, and your overall band score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band.

IELTS Academic or General Training: which one do you need?

  • IELTS Academic is for university admission at undergraduate or postgraduate level and for some professional registrations.
  • IELTS General Training is usually for work, training programmes or migration to countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.

What is the IELTS One Skill Retake?

One Skill Retake lets you resit a single section of IELTS (Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking) if you did not get the score you needed in that skill. Instead of repeating the full test, you only retake the one section that held you back.

How One Skill Retake works

  1. Take the full computer-delivered IELTS test.
  2. Receive your results and identify the skill that fell short of your target.
  3. Book a One Skill Retake for that skill, generally within 60 days of your original test date.
  4. Sit the retake. You will receive a new Test Report Form showing your new score for that skill alongside your original scores for the other three.

If your retake score is lower, you can still use your original result, so there is little risk in trying. Remember that not every university or immigration body accepts OSR results yet, so confirm with your institution before you rely on it.

Tip: Most students who need a retake miss their target in Writing or Speaking. Focused coaching on those two skills before your retake often makes the difference of half a band or more.

Computer-delivered IELTS: pros and cons for UAE students

Advantages

  • Results in 1–2 days instead of almost two weeks.
  • Typing is faster and neater than handwriting for most students, and word counts are shown automatically.
  • Clear headphones for every candidate in the Listening test.
  • Easy to highlight text and move between questions in Reading.

Things to prepare for

  • No extra transfer time in Listening, so answers must be typed as you go.
  • Reading long passages on screen can be tiring if you have only practiced on paper.
  • Spelling still counts, and there is no spell-check.

How to prepare for the IELTS exam in the UAE in 2026

  1. Set your target band. Check the score your university, employer or visa requires, including any minimum per skill.
  2. Take a diagnostic test. Find out your current band so you know how much improvement you need.
  3. Practice on a computer. Do full timed mock tests on screen, including typed Writing tasks.
  4. Get feedback on Writing and Speaking. These skills improve fastest with an experienced examiner-style tutor marking your work.
  5. Book your test with time to spare. Leave room for a One Skill Retake before your deadline in case you need it.

At AEI Dubai, our IELTS preparation programme follows exactly this plan, with small classes, computer-based mock tests and personal feedback. You can also explore our wider exam preparation courses in Dubai, including SAT, GRE and GMAT, or compare IELTS with TOEFL preparation in Dubai if your university accepts both. If you need to build your general English first, our English language courses are a good starting point.
